In my book, there’s no better lunch than a club sandwich. Stacked high with three types of meat (ham, turkey, and bacon), lettuce, tomato, and cheddar, all layered between three slices of toasted bread, this is the sandwich that lets you have it all. If you’re craving this classic at home, then I’ve got good news: It may seem like a feat, but this mile-high sandwich is all too easy to make at home once you get your hands on all the ingredients. In 10 minutes, you’ll have a wow-worthy, towering lunch on your hands that I guarantee will make your week.

How To Make A Club Sandwich

INGREDIENTS

  • Sliced Bread: Because bread is one of the star players in this recipe, I recommend being intentional with your choice. Use a good, fresh variety, and toast it just enough so that the butter melts in as you spread it on. Toasting also helps with the sandwich’s structural integrity, and buttering adds a bit of richness to our layers of flavor.
  • Mayo: Sorry, mayo haters. With all of that bread, we’re going to need some form of a spread or sauce, and a thin (or generous) spread of mayo on the bread brings that necessary moistness to the sandwich.
  • Romaine: Romaine lettuce adds a welcome crunch and texture to the sandwich. You can use another type of lettuce, but romaine is traditional and unfussy.
  • Tomato Slices: Fresh tomato provides some sweetness (and another moist component) to the sandwich. Any medium to large sliced tomato will work here!
  • Bacon: When doesn’t bacon make a sandwich better? It not only adds so much flavor here, but also more texture (depending on how crisp you like your bacon). If you want things a bit lighter, you can swap the bacon for turkey bacon or even use some veggie bacon.
  • Cheddar: A slice of cheddar is traditional, but if you only have another sliced cheese on hand, feel free to swap it out for your favorite.
  • Turkey & Ham: Deli-sliced turkey and ham are the traditional deli meats in this sandwich. I highly recommend using both, but if you’re looking to shake things up, I love to change out the deli ham for the slightly more flavorful (and beautiful) mortadella.

STEP-BY-STEP INSTRUCTIONS

First, toast the bread until golden. Be careful not to over-toast the slices, or your sandwich will be overly dry. Once toasted, spread a thin layer of butter on both sides of every slice to make them more moist and easier to layer. Then spread some mayo on one side of one slice of bread. Now, we can move on to stacking.

While the stacking may seem tedious, trust me—it’s what makes this sandwich absolutely packed with flavor. The order of stacking is important and traditional, so stick with it if you’re looking to make the classic club! On top of the mayo-spread bread, pile on the lettuce, then tomato slices, then a light seasoning of salt and pepper. Top with the cooked bacon.

Spread some more mayo on both sides of a second piece of bread, then place it on top of the bacon. Stack up the cheddar, then turkey, then ham. Spread the last of the mayo on one side of the last piece of bread, then place it on top of the sandwich, making sure that the mayo side is down.

Cutting this sandwich into triangles is traditional for a reason: It makes it so much easier to enjoy. Secure the sandwich with four toothpicks (to ensure nothing spills out), then cut it into 4 triangles. Now, enjoy all those beautiful layers and eat!

What To Serve With A Club Sandwich

I’ll never say no to chips or French fries, but I particularly love this sandwich with classic potato salad or macaroni salad. If you’re looking for something lighter, our crunch salad or Mediterranean pasta salad would also work great here. Whatever you choose, don’t forget the pickle!
