The Executive Chef of Philippine Publishing

We sat down with newly minted BoF 500 inductee Archie Carrasco on running a publishing empire like a top-notch kitchen and reserving a seat for the Philippines at the global table.

As CEO of the AGC Power Holdings Corporation, Carrasco spearheads and steers a formidable media domain that houses powerhouse global and homegrown titles—from Vogue Philippines and GQ Philippines to One Mega Group’s historic titles like MEGA and Delish Philippines. And he firmly chooses to approach the Philippine media landscape by the wisdom of a seasoned executive chef who recognizes that great dining isn’t achieved by his set of hands alone, but by a brigade of specialized cooks.

The Culinary Art of Empowerment

In a professional kitchen, people are assigned stations. It’s the pastry chef who takes care of the breads and desserts, the saucier who perfects the reduction at the stove, and the chef de partie who lords over the grill. Carrasco leads AGC under the same principle. Rather than imposing on every brand, he recruits great talent, hands them the reins, and grants them the creative license to lead.

“By accepting that a company cannot scale around one person,” he said when asked how he ensures how such a large corporation runs like a well-oiled machine. “You need strong leaders, clear accountability, systems, measurable objectives and a culture where people understand not only what they need to deliver but why it matters. My role has increasingly become ensuring that the right people, structures and resources are in place so excellence can happen consistently without depending on me being in every room.”

By empowering his editors, publishers, multimedia artists, and creative directors to run their titles with credibility and authority, Carrasco has developed an environment that thrives on trust. Like a true master chef, he sets the temperature in the room, ensures the pantry is stocked with world-class inventory and efficient mechanism, and he freely lets his team come up with not just dishes but also dining experiences that resonate with their niche audiences. It’s not that he can’t do these himself, he writes and conjures the most creative concepts. Instead, Archie allows his team to excel at what they do best so he can focus on much bigger, nobler things—like elevating the standard.

Local Flavors On a Global Plate

Carrasco’s journey has never been about just sticking with what works. Like an innovative chef, he takes humble ingredients and transforms them into a Michelin-starred plate, one that will be acknowledged and appreciated through any lens.

While others questioned the survival of local publishing in the digital age, he held on to his belief and bet big on Filipino excellence to carry the titles forward. Because for him, bringing international heavyweights such as Delish to the country was never about adopting a foreign identity but about giving local storytellers an avenue to preserve their heritage and promote it to the world. He recognizes that Filipino culture isn’t an afterthought but the real deal, one that’s capable of attracting a global appetite when served on the right platter.

The Visionary at the Pass

“[The BoF 500 recognition] validates the idea that building media institutions from the Philippines can have relevance beyond the Philippines,” said Carrasco. “But I don’t see it as validation that the work is finished. I see it as encouragement to think bigger and to create more opportunities with whatever credibility the recognition brings.”

In the high-stakes kitchen of modern publishing, Archie Carrasco has proven that genuine leadership isn’t about standing in the spotlight. It’s about building a kitchen worthy of world-class talent, setting a table big enough for global conversation, and reminding the world just how extraordinary Filipino talent tastes when given the space to shine.
