The Top Choice in Our Manila Glazed Donut Taste Test Came Down to Balance

Four tasters, five donuts, and one deceptively simple question: which one gets the balance of dough, sweetness, and texture just right?

It’s ironically simple but with variations distinct on its own. At the end of the day, the one that found the sweet spot reigned supreme. [PHOTO: Beni Mateo]

A glazed donut has nowhere to hide. There’s no filling to distract you, no elaborate topping to do the heavy lifting. It’s dough, glaze, and whatever happens when the two come together. Get the balance right and you have the kind of thing you can have with your coffee, pick up on the way home, crave on a workday, or find yourself thinking about again a few hours later.

That simplicity is part of the appeal. Manila has no shortage of donuts with extravagant toppings and flavors, but there’s something to be said for the original glazed—it’s familiar, easy to find, and sweet enough to satisfy a craving without turning it into an entire production.

We leveled the playing field by choosing the most accessible, most familiar, and relatively affordable choices for the everyday Filipino. So we brought five familiar names to the table, each with its own following and its own idea of what makes a good donut. We wanted to know which one would make us reach for it again.

Four of us tasted all five. The verdict? Let’s find out!

The Familiar Favorite

Dunkin’ hardly needs an introduction. It has been part of the Philippine food landscape since 1981, long enough to become a default for many of us. Familiarity is part of its charm, and there’s comfort in a treat that gives you the same feeling you had when you were 8 and it was your first time having it.

That same familiarity also makes a glazed donut from Dunkin’ an important benchmark. With a straightforward classic, there’s little room for novelty to carry the experience. It has to deliver on the basics: the dough, the sweetness, and the glaze. It’s an easy, everyday option, and one that earns its place in the lineup by being so readily woven into a standard Filipino’s daily life.

A Little More Vanilla

When J.CO arrived in the Philippines, it brought a more contemporary cafe sensibility to the local donut scene, pairing its donuts with coffee and presenting them as part of a wider cafe experience. Its glazed donut has a personality of its own, too.

For our tasters, the vanilla note stood out. It came through more prominently than in the other donuts, giving the glaze a distinctly vanilla-forward character. Depending on what you want from a glazed donut, that can be a draw. It gives the classic a recognizable flavor beyond straightforward sweetness, though it also makes the vanilla a bigger part of the experience.

The Homegrown Contender

Cello’s has been around since 2004, growing from its beginnings in Katipunan into a homegrown name in the local donut scene. It brings a different kind of familiarity to the table: one built locally, with a flavor profile that doesn’t simply disappear into the background.

Among our tasters, Cello’s stood out for a deeper flavor and a slight tangy kick and a nutmeg undertone that made it feel more distinctive. One taster found it tasting “homemade”, a fitting description for a donut that seemed to offer more than sweetness alone. It had a character that lingered, giving the classic glaze a little more to say for itself.

Let the Dough Do the Work

Randy’s brought its Los Angeles roots and famously oversized donut-shop presence to Manila in 2022. But for this tasting, it wasn’t the brand’s size or reputation that mattered. It was what happened when we took a bite.

Coming in the size as big as your hand, the donut was heftier than the others. But even though it looked hefty, it had a soft texture and a dough flavor that held its own against the glaze. Rather than relying on a particularly pronounced flavor note, it made a case for the dough itself. The sweetness was there, but so was something substantial underneath it.

The One to Beat

For plenty of donut lovers, Krispy Kreme’s Original Glazed is the reference point. Since opening its first Philippine store in 2006, the brand has become a familiar part of the local donut conversation. Its glazed donut has the kind of recognition that makes it easy to crave before you’ve even walked into a shop.

It also has a loyal following among our panel. Three of the four tasters chose Krispy Kreme as their favorite, a reminder that the qualities people love about it remain persuasive. Its place in this tasting was never in question.

The Verdict

It wasn’t a clean sweep, and it wasn’t meant to be a definitive ranking of every glazed donut in Manila. It was a matter of which one our panel wanted to eat again. And that’s what makes a simple glazed donut interesting to compare. Familiarity, texture, sweetness, and personal preference all play a part. What feels like the perfect balance to one person might be a little too light or a little too sweet for someone else.

The winner got this right: taste-wise, its dough had enough flavor to stand on its own, its texture was soft but substantial, and the glaze complemented rather than overwhelmed it. Cost-wise, it was good value for money, especially in the size that it comes in. It was the donut that made the most of having so few ingredients to work with.

Overall, a good glazed donut doesn’t need to be complicated. It needs to be sweet without becoming cloying, soft without feeling insubstantial, and flavorful enough that the last bite is just as satisfying as the first. It should work with coffee, hold its own as a snack, and leave you wanting another one for the right reasons.

That donut was Randy’s. Krispy Kreme still has a cult following on our panel, and each of the other three has its own appeal. But when the craving is for a glazed donut and nothing else, we found ourselves deciding that Randy’s is the one we’d buy again.

Giving us the complete package, it checked all the boxes we were looking for in a glazed donut, and it’s definitely something we would buy again… and again.

Randy’s won three votes out of four, with Krispy Kreme earning second place.
